On Call in Hell

11 03 2007

Listen to Terry Gross’s interview with Navy Commander Richard Jadick on NPR’s Fresh Air. Jadick is a military surgeon who was honored with a Bronze Star for his nothing-short-of-heroic service during the Battle of Fallujah in Iraq. His decision to take his medical team to the wounded on the front line is as remarkable for its matter-of-fact determination to save lives as it is for its bravery and courage.

Jadick speaks about his experiences with an openness and honesty that commands attention. His direct demeanor reveals not one ounce of pretentiousness. What he accomplished at age 38, leaving behind a wife and newborn baby to throw himself in harm’s way to save others, took guts.  I applaud his heroism and admire his selflessness.

Newsweek covered his story in the March 20 issue. You can read the full story on MSNBC’s web site. He also appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. And, he has a book of his memoirs out called On Call In Hell.
