No Joy in Mudville…Erh, I Mean Lewisburg

10 03 2007

Oh well…things don’t always go as planned. Sadly, the Bison were not victorious last night.  They fell short against the Holy Cross Crusaders 74-66. Read a write up about it here. But one third of the “raucous” fans were clad in orange….we do love our Bison!!

But this occasion does bring to mind a poem. Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s Casey at the Bat.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;

The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,

And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;

But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

Create an Orange Out

Ray Bucknell

Go Bison!!! They’re in the fray yet again! This Friday at 4:30 pm, my alma mater, the Bucknell Bison, takes on the Holy Cross Crusaders for the Patriot League championship.

 In response, almuni associations across the country are lobbying to create an “Orange Out.” All of you out there who support the Bison, be sure to wear your brightest orange on Friday and tune in to ESPN2.

I’m excerpting directly from the Bucknell site which has everything you need to know about the history leading up to this game:

With a victory over Holy Cross, Bucknell would:

… win its third consecutive and third overall Patriot League championship.
… secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It would be the team’s third straight NCAA berth and fifth in program history.
… join the Crusaders as the only Patriot League teams to win three straight PL titles.
… win its 15th game in a row, which would extend the longest modern-day winning streak in school history.
… win its 23rd game in 27 outings since the 0-4 start.
… reach the 23-win plateau for the sixth time in school history.
… tie a school record with its 11th road victory of the season.
… improve to 10-9 against the Crusaders at the Hart Center.
… improve to 7-4 against Holy Cross in the Patriot League Tournament (3-1 in PL championship games).
… win its 9th straight Patriot League Tournament game, which would be a league record.

Rooke Chapel Ringers

17 01 2007

I road-tripped with some friends last week to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, PA to see one of our church’s students play in the Rooke Chapel Ringers, the handbell choir from my alma mater, Bucknell University. Here are some photos from The Morning Call newspaper from their concert on the previous evening in Whitehall, PA.

These kids are fantastic! I saw them last year when they played in Morristown, NJ and was amazed! William Payn, the university’s director of choral studies, has developed a spectacular musical program around handbells and choral music. The Ringers are a feature of Bucknell’s famous Christmas Candelight Service which was nominated for an Emmy in 2003.

Bravo to all you ringers!! You make us alumni so very proud.
